HBB updated to v0.2.5

13 December 2008 (v0.2.5)

  • Changed blue tick to yellow tick so it can be seen easier
  • Made help and controls window larger
  • Free space is now shown at the bottom right of screen
  • Added menu when pressing home, can go into settings, reboot the wii or return to loader. Hold the home button to return to loader at any time.
  • Added settings which allow you to change when the image files are downloaded; either at startup or on-demand. Can enable or disable the free space text.
  • Added update all applications feature. You access this when clicking on the SD card icon. Once you are shown your applications, the SD card icon changes to an update icon which you can click.

The much requested update all apps feature has now been added to the HBB. Just click on the SD card icon and then an update button will appear in the SD icons place. Click on that and it’ll ask you if you wish to update. After that you will see it automatically update all outdated applications.

Small things like making the help and controls screen larger seemed like it was needed as well as now having a menu when you press the home button. You can now go to settings, reboot the wii or return to loader. In the settings, as some people have requested, you can now choose to download the images before HBB actually loads (as was done in versions before v0.2.1b). You can also choose whether or not the free space show be shown.

I should also note that all FCEU and SNES unofficial emulators have been removed as per this message. Basically the official versions have all the features of the unofficial emulators.

Download HBB v0.2.5 or run HBB on your Wii to update.

  1. andy says:

It locates the server and then just produces a code dump

  2. CasperH says:

It’s failing with the initialising with wifi:-(

  3. teknecal says:

    andy: Can you try again?
CasperH: Are you using a USB wireless adapter?

  4. ekolimits says:

hey teknecal, i tyed your homebrew browse 0.2.5 and it produced a code dump just like for andy… with CasperH’s problem… just keep tying it takes a few ties for the wii sometimes lol, but the code dump error is there alright, i tried different ways of installing homebrew browser as well… i did the automatic one within the app itself and went here on codemii.com and manually installed the app and same result… it finds wifi and gives a code dump error…By the way, ive been using your app for the longest and i think it one of the greatest apps that brings all of wiibrew together! THANKS MAN!

  5. teknecal says:

ekolimits: Are you able to try out v0.2.4 and see if that still works?
It seems like it might be having a problem retrieving the list but it works for me.

Do you see “Retrieving the Homebrew List…” for a second or two?

Do you have a gmail account? If so please add me teknecal@gmail.com so we speak via IM and try to find a solution.

    Can you try http://www.codemii.com/hbbv025_diffat.dol

  6. teknecal says:

    After speaking with ekolimits:
    http://www.codemii.com/hbbv025_settingsfix.dol seems to work.

Can you guys test and see if it works for you?

  7. Dr.Mario says:

    Great update!
Everything works perfectly for me (without using the settings fix in your last post) I am also using the usb lan adapter instead of wifi.

  8. […] updaten, sofern eine nternet Verbindung besteht. F

  9. Twile says:

I updated to 0.2.5 and it did give me a code dump when establishing the connection. I then tried your settingsfix version and I got the same problem. Then I tried the settingsfix version and I deleted the Settings.xml file before running the app. It ran! However, when I ran it, it said there was a new update. Is this a bug or something? Also, I really like the update all apps option. But does it download new apps too or just update old ones?

  10. Twile says:

I just tried the update all feature again and found out that it doesnt download new apps. I think that could be a new feature “Download All”. Also, is there a 0.2.6 or something you have yet to right about that you’ve made 1 minute ago?

  11. Twile says:

You should make an IRC channel on EFNet like #hbb or #browser or #hbrowser.

  12. pimpsahoy says:

Even with that bug fix, I’m still getting a code dump.

  13. Tparsons5150 says:

doesn’t work here either gives me a code dump also as soon as Network tries to start(i’m using a Wifi router). I just downloaded 2.4 again and skipped the update and it works fine, tried 2.5 again and still error so sticking to 2.4 for now

  14. Twile says:

    Download: http://www.codemii.com/hbbv025_settingsfix.dol
Use that to replace the boot.dol for the homebrew browser
Then make sure you also delete the SETTINGS.XML file in that directory.
Then you should be able to launch it.
When it prompts you to update, don’t!
    This worked for me.

  15. bergkees says:

Did the update today and it worked great.
Thnx for all the improvements and making this very useful program even better!
Any chance you could implement the same screenfix as the latest HBC did(removing the black bars left and right) with a future version?

  16. teknecal says:

Twile: It will always think that there is a new version as it only checks for file size difference. The update function is just supposed to update all your applications that are outdated. I could add like a queue button which could replaced the faded out delete button, so that you would like the Add to queue button then go to your queue and download all applications that you have selected.

pimpsahoy & Tparsons5150: Could you try deleting the settings file and trying again?.

I have just updated the zip file on CodeMii (which also contains the settings.xml file). The update file in HBB has also been updated, so anyone with problems could you try to update again?

  17. harry says:

I’ve just updated (3mins ago) and got the code dump when starting the new version.

I then deleted the 0 byte SETTINGS.xml file, and then it started.

I didn’t use “hbbv025_diffat.dol”. Just deleted the Settings. Maybe it’s because the Settings.xml is empty? Now it has 61 Byte, after the correct start.

  18. harry says:

Ahhh, I forgot: Great update neither the less; thank you very much! The update all apps is very usefull, and yay for settings!

(Buuut I think the Free space font is unfortunate. Hard to read.)

  19. harry says:

I also noticed: When I say “update” an application and I cancel the ZIP download, it deletes the whole application folder for this app.

Wouldn’t it be better if only the ZIP is deleted if the ZIP download isn’t finished, as the apps/xx folder shouldn’t be touched anyway by this time?

  20. Zulianino says:

I have updated via wifi but after the update it failed at the network initialise. I have downloaded the new version from here and i saw that in the archive there was also a file called settings.xml that the update had not create. I have overwrite tha all files on the sd with the downloaded files and all it’s ok.
    Sorry for my english

  21. teknecal says:

harry: That’s strange about the 0 byte XML file. Are you able to test something out for me?

Try removing the settings.xml file and try out http://www.codemii.com/hbbv025_xmlcheck.dol and then load and see if the XML file is still 0 bytes and if HBB even boots up.

It should detect that the XML file is 0 bytes, remove it and proceed with HBB. Then on the next run of HBB it should try and create it again or so I hope. Very strange how it works for some people and not for others.

About the updating deleting thing, you’re right. I should change that.

  22. Dottor_male says:

Great work! no problem for me.
Now we just need a nice background music… 🙂

  23. harry says:

@teknecal: I’ll try it when I get back home, hopefully today in the evening.

  24. bnm81002 says:

as “teknecal” said the settings file showed 0 bytes so I deleted the homebrew browser folder and installed the new folder off of the codemii website and it loaded up with no code dump errors, thanks for the help

  25. harry says:

@teknecal: Sorry, I wasn’t able to test it yesterday.

YES, the xmlcheck.dol works fine after I deleted the settings file and old dol. It went through the update and created the 61 byte settings.xml like this:

So, no code dumps anymore. Great work, as always 🙂

  26. harry says:

Erm… the xml code was deleted, of course. Nevermind, it’s the right XML. 😉

  27. harry says:

I just had another idea for a (small) improvement:

Retrieving the HB list takes longer and longer, as it seems. It nearly takes up the same amount of time as connection to the internet.

A solution could be a “hblist.xml” in the homebrew_browser SD folder, just containing the basic information about the apps (I guess you have something like this on your server anyway?).

If you stored the hblist.xml to the SD, the application would only have to check “if (date of server XML > date of SD XML) then copy from server”. This would save the download time for most of the startups.

Don’t know if this is especially usefull, but I get the feeling that nobody wants to wait one second too long if there’s a way around it 😉

  28. blackman says:

    Its freezing.
I click on GXGEO download and it start. On 50% downloading “at eternum”… Some problem downloading SNes9xGX Visualboy Advance, etc…

  29. Pentarix says:

I have never used Homebrew Browser before. I came to this site today and downloaded the HBB v0.2.5 file. I placed it in the /apps folder on my SD card, ran Homebrew Channel. The app locates the server and then gives a code dump error.

I (obviously) already have the new settings.xml 61 byte file, so I replaced the boot.dol with the hbbv025_settingsfix.dol and it gave me the code dump error. When I delete the settings.xml file, it freezes at “Retrieving the Homebrew List…” and just sits there indefinitely.

I added the new settings.xml 61 byte file back in and replaced the
boot.dol with hbbv025_xmlcheck.dol and it gave me the code dump
error. So I deleted the settings.xml and it freezes on “Retrieving the Homebrew List…”

Also I have verified that I am connected to the internet via the USB wifi adapter by connecting to the Wii Shop Channel and by doing a connection test.

    Any suggestions?

  30. Pentarix says:

    Update:

I decided to try HBB v0.2.4 instead.

When it asks me if I want to update, I said yes and got the code dump error.

When I say no, it takes me to the Homebrew Browser and I get a ‘fwrite error: [i] not owner’ error.

Taking the suggestion of someone in the HBB v0.2.4 thread, I backup and then format my SD card, then I reload it and try again. I still get the ‘fwrite error: [i] not owner’ error.

    I am using firmware 2.2U

  31. Michael says:

I am also getting the code dump. Could you update your blog with your recommended solution for this?

By the way, this is a great app and a must for any Wii homebrew enthusiasts. This is the first time I have had any problems with it.

  32. Pentarix says:

Somehow I must have accidentally turned my SD card lock on. Remember to double check folks, it could have saved me a couple of hours.

  33. teknecal says:

Michael please try v0.2.5a, that should fix the issue. Otherwise find the settings.xml file and delete it or replace it with the one that comes in the zip file located here: http://www.codemii.com/wiihomebrew/homebrew_browser_v0.2.5a.zip

  34. mile says:

I had problems wit 025a it causes crash dump. I formated my SD card and it did a trick, but i notice that WRITE PROTECTION was ON on my SD card (slider on a card was almost in lock position), and it is possible it cause a problem at the first place

  35. Wilsoff says:

Thanks for a great app, one bit of feedback. I installed Frodo v3 (c64 emu) from HBB. I had some disk images in the image directory. I installed Frodo v5 from HBB, the first time I tried it downloaded, extracted, and then said failed, and then said deleting. I installed it again from HBB, this time it succeeded. However, when I opened it all of my disk images had gone. These are stored in sd\apps\frodo\images . Is it possible to add a bit of error checking and delete a little bit less on fails please? Not the end of the world as people should have this sort of thing backed up. THANKS!

  36. teknecal says:

Yeah sure. I’ll add it to the list of things not to delete.
