HBB v0.3: Almost ready

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

HBB v0.3 has progressed to the point where it’s almost ready to be released. I am looking for people to test and post any issues or comments.

HBB Rev 8 is available for download.
Please do comment either in this post or on the HBB Dev website.

Edit: HBB has been updated to Rev 9 now.
Edit 2: HBB has been updated to Rev 10 which should fix issues when trying to download at first boot. You can download Rev10 also from HBB in the Demo section.

Edit 3: HBB Rev 11 is out which will most likely be the last Revision there is. HBB v0.3 will be release in 1 to 2 days provided there isn’t any major bugs found.

HBB updated to v0.2.5c

17 March 2009 (v0.2.5c)

  • Fixed issue with utilities section that was causing it to be empty
  • Fixed zip progress issue

This update is just a quick fix for the issue that’s occurred when adding a new application to the utilities list. Also while I was at it I believe the zip progress issue has been fixed too.

Download HBB v0.2.5c or run HBB on your Wii to update.

In case you’re wondering how HBB v0.3 is progressing and you haven’t checked out the HBB Revisions yet, you can have a look at this Youtube video.

HBB updated to v0.2.5b

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

24 January 2009 (v0.2.5b)

  • Keep retrying networking initialisation
  • Now shows the progress when extracting the zip files (thanks Tantric)
  • Detects the ftpii directory when using a password like ftpii_mypass
  • Keep meta.xml name when updating if it has been edited
  • Added more error checking when updating HBB, if updating fails it reverts back to the previous version
  • Media category becoming unavailable should now be fixed
  • Fixed controller screen to display accurate Dpad information

A few small things have been added to the HBB as shown above. The media category bug has finally been fixed as far as I can tell which is good news :). The extracting screen now has a progress bar thanks to Tantric and the network initialisation has been changed to keep retrying if it fails.

If you haven’t noticed some new pages on the blog I’ll point them out. The first one is HBB Development which gives you up to date information about the HBB development, features planned, bugs found, etc. You can also sign up, comment and submit bug reports. The second page is the HBB Guide which explains how things work.

Homebrew Browser v0.3 Development

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The Homebrew Browser v0.3 is under development and I would like some feedback on what needs to be changed or what works well. The two main changes will be the main page which the homebrew is displayed and having a proper about page. The Main page is a rough design, the icons/text will look better.

HBB Main page
The idea of the main page is to make it as less cluttered as possible. Maybe the descriptions should be made shorter. The Emulators button would be click-able at which point all the categories would drop down and let you select which one to choose.

HBB About page
A informative page for the application.

Some Feedback questions include:
Does anything need to be changed?
Is there too much text?
Does the About page need an icon?
Is there any information missing?
Is the text describing the application long enough?

HBB updated to v0.2.5a

Friday, December 19th, 2008

19 December 2008 (v0.2.5a)

  • Fixed XML issue which caused a code dump
  • Added update text so it now tells you what’s new before you update

Just a quick update which should fix the XML issue that was causing some people to have a code dump. Also when there is a new update it will tell you what’s new in the update.

Download HBB v0.2.5a or run HBB on your Wii to update.

HBB updated to v0.2.5

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

13 December 2008 (v0.2.5)

  • Changed blue tick to yellow tick so it can be seen easier
  • Made help and controls window larger
  • Free space is now shown at the bottom right of screen
  • Added menu when pressing home, can go into settings, reboot the wii or return to loader. Hold the home button to return to loader at any time.
  • Added settings which allow you to change when the image files are downloaded; either at startup or on-demand. Can enable or disable the free space text.
  • Added update all applications feature. You access this when clicking on the SD card icon. Once you are shown your applications, the SD card icon changes to an update icon which you can click.

The much requested update all apps feature has now been added to the HBB. Just click on the SD card icon and then an update button will appear in the SD icons place. Click on that and it’ll ask you if you wish to update. After that you will see it automatically update all outdated applications.

Small things like making the help and controls screen larger seemed like it was needed as well as now having a menu when you press the home button. You can now go to settings, reboot the wii or return to loader. In the settings, as some people have requested, you can now choose to download the images before HBB actually loads (as was done in versions before v0.2.1b). You can also choose whether or not the free space show be shown.

I should also note that all FCEU and SNES unofficial emulators have been removed as per this message. Basically the official versions have all the features of the unofficial emulators.

HBB updated to v0.2.4

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

7 November 2008 (v0.2.4)

  • Able to view currently installed applications
  • Fixed bug in downloading and removing applications which affected uno and may have affected other applications
  • Retries increased to 10 times with a longer pause in-between
  • Able to reboot the Wii by holding B and pressing Home
  • Detects if you have a .elf version of any application and lets you update that application
  • Now uses zip files which means download sizes are reduced (thanks Tantric)
  • Added SDHC support
  • Detects if HBB icon or meta file exist, if they don’t then it downloads them

Thanks to Tantric the Homebrew Browser now has zip support. This means that applications that were classified as having too many files can now be included in the HBB. Applications now will take less time to download however the trade off is it takes a little while to extract the zip files.

HBB updated to v0.2.3b

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

26 October 2008 (v0.2.3b)

  • Using dol instead of elf to work with HBC beta 9

Out of no where the HBC was updated to Beta 9 and what you might have figured out is that the HBC now only loads valid ELF files. This was news to me and as far as I’m aware they didn’t tell any homebrew developers about this. The only way you’d know about it is by reading the new README file that’s included or trying to run a elf file. It would have been nice if they had told us about this new ELF feature before they released it.

Those of you who have updated to HBC Beta 9 will have to re-download the HBB manually.

Download HBB v0.2.3b or run HBB on your Wii to update (you will need to update twice).

I was working on showing all the applications on your SD card before the newest HBC came out. You can view them by moving your cursor to the top left corner of the screen and pressing A.

HBB updated to v0.2.3a

Monday, September 29th, 2008

30 September 2008 (v0.2.3a)

  • Wlan adapter should now work with the HBB
  • Applications should now be detected properly
  • When applications are downloaded/deleted from the popular category they will now appear correctly in other categories and vice versa

As lots of users were having problems, the HBB has been updated to v0.2.3a which should now fix the issues. If there are still outstanding issues, please let me know.
